Pikaninie-Wiegelied
Composer: Walter Spiethoff
Writer: Walter Spiethoff

Slaap, Pikaninie, ons vee’s in die kraal
Almal ons skapies en bokkies
More vroeg kry jy van soet pap ‘n maal
En ‘n paar spierwitte sokkies

Slaap, Pikaninie, die ou bobbejaan
Ken mos vir jou vantevore.
As jy nie slaap, kan jy seker wees, man,
Byt hy jou neus af en ore.

Pappie kom more terug van die dam;
Ry op sy vet ou kapater.
As hy dan hoor hoe jy soet was, my lam,
Hoe sal jou Pappie dan skater!

Kruip nou maar diep in jou velkombers in;
Mammie bak lekker vars tertjies.
As jy nie slaap kry jou Mamma haar sin,
Soen Pikanien op sy sterjies.

Pikaninie-Wiegelied
English Translation

Sleep, little child, our flocks are in the kraal (enclosure),
All our sheep and goats.
Early tomorrow you’ll get a meal of sweet porridge
And two crisp white socks.

Sleep, little child, the old baboon
Knows you from long ago
If you don’t sleep, you can certainly know
He’ll bite off your nose and ears!

Daddy will return tomorrow from the dam
Riding on his fat old Billy-goat
When he hears that you have been good, my lamb,
How your Daddy will cheer!

Snuggle deep into your fur blanket,
Mommy is baking fresh tarts.
If you don’t sleep, your Mommy gets what she wants:
To kiss her child on his bottom!
