Listening to and making music has benefits to all these areas of development: language, social, mathematical and spatial awareness, emotional expression. Because its complex structure; classical music has the most benefits.

EASY WAYS OF MAKING MUSIC PART OF YOUR FAMILY LIFE:

  • Sing bedtime songs to them. Make the most of this daily ‘cuddle time’.
  • Make a kitchen orchestra! Allow them to bang on pots and pans.
  • Put on a CD and dance together.
  • Introduce classical music at an early age, even before birth.
  • Play classical music in the car. As you drive, ask questions such as:
    • Was this fast or slow/High or low/Happy or sad?
    • Do you recognise the instruments that are playing?
  • On a long journey, sometimes switch off the CD and sing together as a family. Make turns in starting a new song.
  • Make sure that your children know the songs that are unique to your culture. Don’t allow that heritage to get lost.
  • Play classical music in the background when they do art. Certain music can also be used to provide a theme for the art activity.
  • Don’t underestimate a small child’s ability to respond to complex music!
